The apostle Paul wrote, “Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature” (1 Corinthians 14:20, ESV). While the Christians in Corinth had various gifts of the Holy Spirit, they lacked spiritual maturity in understanding the purpose of these gifts. The Lord did not give these gifts for the purpose of self-glorification, but for the purpose of edification. As the apostle Paul continues in this section, he will give the brethren instructions on how and why to use these gifts during the worship services of the local congregation.
